On July 10th, 18 days before the 2012 London Olympic Games, Ven. Jaseung, the president of the Jogye Order, visited the Taereung Training Center to offer encouragement to the members of the national team.

Ven. President Jaseung’s visit was made under the auspices of the Korea Religious Leaders Council, and was conducted in conjunction with the leaders of seven religious orders, including Ven. Jiwon (the Jogye Order’s Executive Director of Dharma Propagation); Ven. Geun-Deok Choi, Head of the Sung Kyun Kwan school of Confucianism; Un-Gil Lim, the Head Priest of the Chondogyo order; Yang-Won Han, the president of the Korea National Religious Council; In-Gwan Bae, the Executive Secretary of the Christian Council of Korea; and Dae-Seon Kim, the Director of Culture and Society for the Won-Buddhism. This visit of religious leaders to the Taereung Training Center was the first of its kind since the Center opened in June, 1966.

During the visit, Jong-Gil Park, the Head of the Taereung Training Center, informed the religious leaders of the preparations being made for the London Olympic Games, and of the competitive events where Korean athletes were highly likely to win medals. This presentation took place in the VIP hall of the Champion House in the athlete’s village. Twelve thousand men from 204 countries will participate in the London Olympic Games. From the Republic of Korea a total of 374 people—245 athletes plus 129 athletic officials—will attend, taking part in 22 events.

Ki-Hong Lee, the head of the South Korean national team for the London Olympic Games, addressed the group with these words, “Thank you, the leaders of the seven religious orders, for visiting the Taereung Training Center for the first time since the establishment of the Center. We will try to give the citizens of our nation, who are leading hard and exhausting lives, the joy and self-confidence of seeing our athletes embody the ‘Just try, you will succeed’ attitude when they achieve their goal.”

Venerable President Jaseung of the Jogye Order said, “Today’s event has been prepared so that the leaders of these seven religious orders can encourage the athletic officials and the athletes. The Olympic Games are an international contest that moves people in the world to tears. We pray that the athletes, supervisors, and athletic officials—all of you—will obtain a good result commensurate with your efforts.”

Then, the Ven. President of the Jogye order and the other religious leaders took a tour of the training grounds for women’s hockey, taekwondo, and gymnastics, and visited the physical fitness center for the national team members. During their visit they provided encouragement to the team members.

After the Venerable President’s visit, a ‘Dharma meeting for encouraging the national team for the London Olympic Games and making a good fight’ was held, with sincerity and reverence, in the Dharma Hall of the Taereung Training Center. About 200 people attended, including Ven. Jiwon, the Executive Director of Dharma Propagation for the Jogye Order, who is also a guiding Dharma instructor in the physical education division of the Dharma Propagation Bureau’s functional Dharma-transmission corps. Also in attendance were the executives and lay Buddhists of the Buddhist Association of Athletes; Yong-Dae Lee, a Badminton player; and Hyunju-Choi, an archery contestant.
